One of the most common questions asked by patients who are considering labia reduction surgery is “will my labia grow back again after surgery, if I have a child?” The clinician must explain to the patient that labial tissue does not regrow. However, pregnancy does cause tremendous vascular engorgement, in the vulvar structures, during pregnancy.
It is not uncommon to see labial engorgement during pregnancy and for many weeks after the delivery. This engorgement may lead to some residual stretching of the labia tissue but nothing to compare to the return of the original labial hypertrophy state for which the patient originally came to the clinicians office.
It is important for the physician to reassure the patient that the labial reduction surgery results in a permanent loss of labial tissue and that even with engorgement of pregnancy, the labial tissue will never return to its original and enlarged state.
